9/8/2005: It's so... BIG.

Howdy folks!

Here's a nice long Sporadic McShow for your reading
pleasure. I hope all of you playa monkeys made it back
safe and sound (and burnt and frazzled...) With my
classes starting up again it's going to be challenging
to keep some free time for the McShow every week. More
inconsistency is in the forecast, but I promise to do
my best to do my duty to honor my music... my funk...
my jazz... my jam... etcetera etcetera.

Meghan McTiernan brought to my attention a fund set up
by Preservation Hall in New Orleans to help support
the city's musicians during this dark time. We here at
Showy enterprises know that the musicians who pour
their hearts out on stage at small clubs every night
often don't have much of a financial cushion if you
know what I mean. Anyone who would like to contribute
to these people that are the very soul of 'Nawlins can

You'll find me at the Boom Boom rockin' out to Will
Bernard
and friends on Saturday and at Karl Denson
next Thursday. That's all I'm settled on, but there
are no shortage of other options for some great stuff.
Give a shout if you're headed out!

|||||| THURSDAY 9/8 ||||||

Oteil & the Peacemakers @ Boom Boom Room $12
Widely regarded as one of the best bass players in the
country, Oteil Burbridge is bringing his gospel
influenced funky rock band to the Boom Boom on
Thursday
. I have had pleasure of seeing him with a few
different bands (including many Allman Brothers shows)
and I can tell ya he is just plain nasty. This show
should be pretty hot.

Bay Area Afro-Cuban All Stars @ Elbo Room $8
I couldn't dig up any info on who's in this band, but
if it's true to the name it should be a great show...

Crosby, Stils, and Nash @ Mountain Winery $50-100
For an unGodly amount of cash, you can catch these
classic rock crooners at one of the most beautiful
venues you'll ever visit. I love their music but damn
they'd better still be on their game for this kind of
money...

|||||| FRIDAY 9/9 ||||||

Papa Grows Funk @ Independent $20 (New Orleans
Benefit)
A true big bad 'Nawlins funk band if ever there was
one, Papa will be in town for a benefit gig on Friday.
These cats have the deep-groove syncopation that
defines New Orleans funk and soul, and they won't let
ya down when it's time ta git' down.

|||||| SATURDAY 9/10 ||||||

Power to the Peaceful @ Golden Gate Park (Speedway
Meadows) $FREE
A huge annual rally for social justice now in its
seventh year, music and activism will be the order of
the day at Power to the Peaceful. Michael Franti (I
can't claim to be a huge fan) and Spearhead are the
perennial headliners (this year joined by the smokin'
jazz mafia horns). Sharing the bill is a diverse
lineup including Anti-Flag, Saul Williams, Jean Grae,
Marie Daulne (of Zap Mama), Glide Chior, J Boogies
Dubtronic Science, and Mollie Angelheart. New this
year is a pro skateboarder exhibition on a vert ramp.

Will Bernard & Motherbug with Joe Cohen and Wil Blades
@ Boom Boom Room $10
I think I'm headin' out to this jazzy funk show, and
so should you. Will is an SF funky veteran on the
6-string and for this night he's joined by two other
local jazz kings: Joe Cohen on Sax and Wil Blades on
organ. Hot stuff.

Mofro | Samantha Stollenwerck @ Independent $14
Their tagline is "front porch soul." These country
cats are really that–full of soul and southern-fried
authenticity. Some of their tunes are beautiful, some
rock, all are real. Samantha opens up with her brand
of Califonicated soul music.

Jeepers this is expensive. Legendary crackhead (and
king of funk) George brings his huge space-funk outfit
to town along with a slew of big name guests: Bootsy
Collins
, Bernie Worrell, Rafael Sadiq, and Amp
Fiddler
.

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe @ Great American Music
Hall
$25
Thursday & Friday shows (I'll be there Thursday!)
Unstoppable, relentless, funky, nasty, groovy sax
machine Karl D is back and on the attack! He's the
best damn funky jazz saxamaphonist I've ever heard and
you should not miss the opportunity to catch him at
one of SF's best historic venues. Come ready for the
funk and ready to dance your feet off. Percussionists
the African Showboyz direct from the country of their
namesake open it up.
