Howdy!
Hoowee, It's been a dog's age since I've seen a good bluegrass show 'round these-a here parts. I reckon the tide's about to be changin' 'cause the Del McCoury band is fixin' ta kick up their heels Friday night at the Fillmo'. They just happen to be about the most rootin' tootin' bluegrass band in the good ol' USA rightabouts now, so ya'll should lace up yer boots and c'mon out!

Del McCoury Band | the Waybacks | Crooked Jades @ Fillmore $25
Yeee-hawww, I’m all over this! Del McCoury is unquestionably one of the best bluegrass bands in the country right now. They embody everything that’s great about the genre: incredible fast-pickin’ musicianship, soulful vocals and harmonies, heel kickin’ good time energy, and an authenticity that you definitely don’t find in all of the shows that come to the Fillmore stage. It’s gonna be a blast, if you’re headed down I’ll see you there!

Vinyl @ North Beach Festival (1:45pm) $FREE
The North Beach Festival has a bunch of music on tap for both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Check out the schedule here: http://www.sfnorthbeach.org/festival/music2005.html My picks of the lineup are funky jazzy latin-grooving Vinyl playing at 1:45 on Saturday and funky high-energy samba from SambaDa on Sunday at Grant & Vallejo at 4pm Sunday. Give me a shout if you’re heading there.
Josh Redman’s Elastic Band | Nicholas Payton’s Sonic Trance @ Great American Music Hall $30
SF Jazz brings together two of the most outstanding horn players in jazz at one great venue for one stellar evening of music. The Associated Press called Redman ‘the Crown Prince of the Tenor Sax.” He’s unreal and his funky band features outstanding players Sam Yahel (B-3 organ) and Brian Blades (drums). Trumpet player Nicholas Payton’s band Sonic Trance is all over the jazz map including influences of funk, trip-hop, electronica, and classical to name a few.

Blue Turtle Seduction @ Connecticut Yankee $5
I’ve been hearing rave reviews of these guys from Tahoe. They play an energetic roots-music mix of bluegrass, funk, reggae, world, and hip-hop. And the word is their mandolin/fiddle player is totally out of control.

SambaDa @ North Beach Festival (4pm) $FREE

Les Claypool @ Independent $25
Bassist extraordinaire Les is bringing some serious talent to this Independent show. Backing him up is vibraphonist/percussionist Mike Dillon (Hairy Apes BMX, Critters Buggin’), drummer Jay Lane (Ratdog), and multi-instrumentalist Gabby La La. This should be really wild stuff.

Garrin Benfield | Kenni | Mokai @ Elbo Room $5-20 (sliding)
Just five dollars gets you in the door for some tasty roots music on Monday night at the Elbo. Garrin is an immensely talented singer/guitarist who does some amazing live looping to build depth and complexity to his one-man grooves. Kenni is described as a new-school Americana folk player and Mokai goes by the tagline ‘100% organic acoustic blues.’

David Byrne & Tosca Strings | Loop!Station @ Mountain Winery (Saratoga) $39.50-59.50
Tuesday and Wednesday shows. The word on the street is that this man (Talking Heads co-founder in case you're even younger than I am) is rocking harder than ever. Reviews of his shows are saying that his voice is amazing and that he does killer versions of some of the ‘Heads tunes in his act. Currently touring with an entire string section, I'm reading that his newer material has a polyrhythmic world music influence but is stylistically innovative and all over the map. Sounds great but damn is it pricey…
Crossfire Crew @ Bruno’s $6
Jazz Mafia brings you this completely new concoction mixing world beat rhythms with hot breakbeat jazz. The players are awesome, the cover is low, and the Stella Artois is $2. Yeah that’s right.
|||||| WEDNESDAY 6/22 ||||||
David Byrne & Tosca Strings | Loop!Station @ Mountain Winery (Saratoga) $39.50-59.50
Tuesday and Wednesday shows. See above.
