Howdy music fans, thanks for tuning in.
For all of you McShow faithful I have a HAPPY FRIDAY
special reward for ya'll:
First person to email me gets a FREE TICKET to Tea
Leaf Green and Aphrodesia at the Fillmore on Friday
April 7th. That's right, absolutely free. No catch
except for subscribing to my opinionated list. Why?
Because Showy loves you baby! Happy Friday!
So we're in the middle of the Noise Pop Festival, but
that's not really my thing so I can't help you there
at all. D'oh! But as usual there is an absurd amount
of great funky music coming our way. If you can brave
the rain (you pansy) c'mon out TONIGHT and join me for
the last of the funky happy hour gigs at House of
Shields downtown. Adam tells me he'll have plenty of
kick ass jazz players around, so let's send 'em off
right. The big news of the weekend is the return of
Soulive on SATURDAY night. They're t h e b e s t
soul-jazz band out there and as long as you're not
coming over to my house you should be there. Or go
there first and come to my house afterwards, either
way...
Next week brings us one of the most unique bands in
jazz, the Bad Plus playing TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY at
Yoshi's. I might groove on over to Madrone Lounge on
WEDNESDAY to catch Bucky Fuckin' Dent with Spearhead
beatboxer Radioactive. I just love the name, and the
bar shouldn't be too crowded on a Wednesday.
Next weekend for April Fool's my pick is Albino at the
SupperClub on SATURDAY. Get your afrobeat on, fool!
And after that the standout for the following bunch o'
workdays would have to be TUESDAY night's Realistic
Orchestra gig. 18 Pieces of big funky breakbeat jazz,
it's freakin' intense.
So email me quick kids, and get your free ticket from
uncle Showy. It's for the love of the music, and won't
someone please think about the children!
|||||| FRIDAY 3/24 ||||||
Cyclomatic Trio & Friends @ Connecticut Yankee $FREE
Join me for the last hurrah of SF's funkiest happy
hour (7-10+) downtown at the House of Shields. Drummer
Adam Willis tells me that there will be plenty of cats
coming through the door to play the last live music
Friday happy hour and that this is not to be missed.
It'll kick ass and hey, it's free!
The Breakfast @ Connecticut Yankee $12
Friday & Saturday Shows. A band on the up-and-coming
trip that I've yet to see, word is The Breakfast
(formerly known more goofily at Psychedelic Breakfast)
does high-energy dance-happy funk rock grooves. Sounds
pretty coo to mel.

Vinyl @ Boom Boom Room $12
The veteran SF latin funk rockers are droppin' in to
the Boom Boom to bring the noise and to bring the
funk.

|||||| SATURDAY 4/25 ||||||
Soulive | Los Lobos @ Grand $32.50
Awwwww yeah! SOULIVE! This incredibly bad ass
soul-jazz outfit is one of my personal favorite bands
on Earth. They just destroy the place each and every
time and are sure to funk it up this weekend somethin'
fierce! And of course Los Lobos are fantastic too, in
the blues-funk style. THE ONLY reason I'm missing this
is that I'm hosting a party that night. So if you go
feel free to drop by after and tell me how much
insanity I missed.

The New Up | Plum Crazy | Pebble Theory @ Jelly's $10
Rock and jam and all kinds of whackiness are on tap at
Jelly's this weekend. These are some excellent local
talent on the rise, and sexy lead singers are always a
sweet bonus...

The Breakfast @ Connecticut Yankee $12
Friday & Saturday Shows, see above.

Ellis Marsalis Quartet @ Herbst Theater $25–65
One of the defining pianists in the history of New
Orleans jazz, Ellis is a legend. Of course this makes
it expensive to see the guy, but I'm sure it will be
fantastic.

|||||| TUESDAY 3/28 ||||||
The Bad Plus @ Yoshi's $10-16
Tuesday & Wednesday shows, 2 per night. Just from
hearing recordings of these guys they sound pretty
freakin' unreal. They deconstruct jazz and swing for a
crazy post-modern mix of cerebral sounds (Medeski
Martin and Wood? Jacob Fred?). And they're so dynamic,
you never know what the hell they're gonna do. I would
love to try to get to one of these shows...

Shotgun Wedding Hip Hop Symphony @ 12 Galaxies $6
Maybe the Jazz Mafia's hottest and tightest band (and
that's saying a lot), Shotgun Wedding always destroys
the place in the funkiest of ways. And for rare
occasions such as this Tuesday, they add some strings
for an even more unique sound.

|||||| WEDNESDAY 3/29 ||||||
The Bad Plus @ Yoshi's $10-16
Tuesday & Wednesday shows, 2 per night. See above.

Bucky Fuckin' Dent w/ Radioactive @ Madrone Lounge $5
The name cracks me up (I'm from Boston), and the band
should in theory be really good. They're made up of
funky jazz/afrobeat cargs from Roy G. Biv, Top Four
Flights, and Free Peoples. And as a special guest
freestyler/beatboxer Radioactive from Spearhead is
droppin' in. Anyone wanna go?

Jazz Mafia Trio Hip Hop Session @ Royale $3
It's the Jazz Mafia hip-hop sesh in North Beach,
givin' you a weekly fixin' of freestyle and funk. Host
Dublin is a mad crazy lyrical master, check 'em out.

|||||| FRIDAY 3/31 ||||||
Film School @ Slim's $12
I've been hearing a lot about this up-and-coming rock
band lately. I like their influences (Pink Floyd, the
Who, obscure alt-80s...). From what I gather their
sound is layered and sophisticated and is just a touch
pop-y, but totally unique as well.

|||||| SATURDAY 4/1 ||||||
Albino @ SF SupperClub (657 Harrison) $?
Damn, I've been wanting to see these guys forever! For
April Fool's they're doing a Burning Man fundraiser
down at SupperClub in SoMa. I've heard their brand of
heavy heavy afrobeat is some of the funkiest out
there. No word on costumes or ticket prices for this
gig... I am pretty much down though.

Ten Mile Tide @ Connecticut Yankee $8
Get yer good time down-home groove on for April Fool's
at The Yankee. Ten Mile Tide plays a rootsy fusion of
bluegrass, folk, and rock, and they do it in unique
and dynamic ways. Haven't seen 'em in a while, it's
tempting.

|||||| TUESDAY 4/4 ||||||
Realistic Orchestra @ 12 Galaxies $12
The big bad 18-piece breakbeat Jazz Mafia orchestra
returns with a sonic boom for their monthly Mission
gig. There is nothing like this anywhere, these guys
start adn stop on a penny! Go dig it and be blown
away.
http://www.jazzmafia.com/index.html
Jeff Beck @ Warfield $45-60
Holy crap, Jeff ain't cheap! But no matter what you
can't deny that he's one of the true innovators in the
history of guitar legends. He evolves his craft too,
and I for one have no idea what he sounds like these
days.

|||||| WEDNESDAY 4/5 ||||||

|||||| THURSDAY 4/6 ||||||
Mafia Lounge @ 222 Club (222 Hyde St.) $?
This sweet little lounge bar defies the neighborhood
with its coolness. Go dig some Thursday grooves from
the Jazz Mafia Trio and slog back some vino.
