Hello funky cats!
Well another incredible High Sierra has come and gone.
I could prattle on about it for this entire email, but
you'd probably get sick of listening to me (I'm sure
that's never happened before...) Suffice to say I came
back with a sunburn and a whole slew of new bands to
see. One excellent thing about the Fest is that a lot
of the bands are in town and will be playing their
asses off all around SF for the next couple weeks.
Here's what's up for the next few days, you dig?
THURSDAY-
~The Motet|The Slip|Hairy Apes BMX @ The Fillmore:
$17.50~
What a great lineup! Hairy Apes is the opener and they
were one of the favorites from H.S. last weekend. If
you go, be sure to get there early enough to catch
them. The Slip has been sounding really clean lately
with their jam band trio and The Motet has a really
cool, unique, rythmic, world-type sound.
~Walter "Wolfman" Washington @ the Boom Boom Room:
$10~
This New Orleans guitar legend embodies the SOUL of
the funk and motown. Their set at H.S. was smokin'. It
would be amazing to see him in such a small club.
~Captain Soularcat @ the Connecticut Yankee: $Cheap~
Yet another H.S. player, these guys belt out tasty
southern-fried rock 'n roll.
FRIDAY-
~Jennifer Hartswick Band @ the Elbo Room: $10~
I wouldn't miss this one for the WORLD! You have to
see this band to believe the energy they crank out.
Jennifer is Trey Anastasio's musical director/back-up
singer/trumpet player and this woman knows how to
rock! Her band is a powerfully funky ensemble with 4
horns, rippin' bass, keys, guitar, and drums. Oh yeah,
and she's just about the best singer you'll see to
boot. Her show was my personal FAVORITE of High
Sierra. Go to this one!
~Cannonball @ Bruno's: $10~
Yeah yeah yeah, everyone knows how much I love
Cannonball. This 8-piece jazz/funk/hip-hop band is
fresh from the release of their third album and are
sure to be throwing down in their home club.
~Brian Jordan Band @ the Boom Boom Room: $12~
Brian is Karl Denson's funky guitar player. He's doing
an all-star show with bass legend Bobby Vega and a
host of other great cats (from Deep Banana Blackout
and Karl D's band).
~Adam Willis @ The House of Shields for happy hour:
FREE!~
Adam seems to always be drumming with great musicians.
This time he has a new band for his happy hour gig
down on New Montgomery. Go check 'em out!
SATURDAY-
~The Reverend Horton Heat @ The Fillmore: $21.50~
Awww, the Rev. These guys are really something else. I
can't really describe the music (trip-punk?) and I
have no idea what he's been up to lately... But I know
some of ya'll out there dig him so let me know how it
was if you go!
~Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes @ the Elbo Room:
$10
Still another stellar H.S. act, Johnny is a high
energy funk-rock band from New Orleans. With fast horn
lines, some hard distorted guitar, and even a little
ska influence they're lots of fun to see.
SUNDAY-
~The Funky Meters @ the Fillmore: $25~
Yeah! The band that practically invented the New
Orleans funk sound is playing a rare Fillmore gig on
Sunday night! I still have yet to see these guys so
let me know if you're down for a little deep groovin'
funk on Sunday night.
~The Reverend Horton Heat @ Slim's: $25~
One more show for the Rev'!
Whew, okay that's all for the weekend folks! There is
some incredible stuff in store for SF music before the
month is out including Karl Denson, String Cheese
Incident, Russo/Benevento Duo, Delta Nove, Nickle
Creek, Antibalas Afrobeat, and MORE! I'll keep you
posted and to you newcomers welcome to the list! You
can check out any time you like, but you can never
leave...
