My apologies once again for the last-minute update folks. My hands were tied. The music waits for no man (or list).
A digression:
Some of you are aware that we here at McShow productions also dabble in a not-for-profit-hot-rod-building side project. In fact it’s so not-for-profit, I would call it: a-huge-loss-hot-rod-building side project. The hot rod is now in the final weeks of a six month process and things are getting really intense around here. It’s like a damn reality show, except a little too real sometimes. The Showy McShow had to wait this week and probably the next few lists will be in the same boat due to lack of time resources here at McShow industries. We hope you’ll bear with us through this trying time.
Please, think of the hot rod.
Extra credit if you know the song “Jesus Built My Hot Rod” and who played it.
Enough of that. Even if I don't have time for the list, I'll always have time for a show. There is the usual plethora of musical options on our San Francisco weekend plate. Roy Hargrove, Everyone Orchestra, Melvin Sparks, Russo/Benevento… I’ll be catching some stuff for sure, so drop me a line if you’re headed out. Here’s the shizzle:
|||||| FRIDAY 5/13 ||||||
Happy Hour Trio @ House of Shields $FREE
Funky drummer Adam Willis cooks up another kick-ass free 6-9 jam. This week he has one of our fair city’s best organists Wil Blades and Swoop Unit guitarist Patrick Greene. PBaaaaR is two bucks, drink up.
Roy Hargrove Quintet @ Yoshi’s $14-24
Friday through Sunday shows. Roy is hands-down my favorite jazz trumpeter/composer. He is mind-bogglingly creative and has the chops to back up whatever his crazy musical mind can create. He comes from a Latin jazz background, but his styles are all over the map. He is just amazing.
Mingus Amungus @ the Boom Boom Room $12
Heavy on the funky jazz and fronted by the big upright bass, these guys blast out intense performances with some hip-hop flavor, dancers on stage, and killer, killer grooves.
Phil Lesh & Friends @ the Warfield $35
Still comin’ around and still pricey, Dead bassman (and really one of the bigger talents in the band) Phil brings his jammy band to the Warfield.
|||||| SATURDAY 5/14 ||||||
Everyone Orchestra @ the Independent $15 (benefit concert)
I’ll probably catch this one. It promises to be one intense night of improvisational music. Some of the best funk, jazz, and jam players in the city will be on hand to rock your ass off. The show will feature members of ALO, Samantha & the Ritual, the Disco Biscuits, Ten Mile Tide, and many more great musicians.

Melvin Sparks @ the Boom Boom Room $15
This might pry me away from Everyone Orchestra. One of the cats credited for inventing soul-jazz, this guitarist is a true legend. Originating with James Brown and Curtis Mayfield, Melvin went on the pave the way for funky acid jazz six stringers for decades to come. He’s a pioneer and the word is he’s awesome to see. Great local jazz rockers the Shim Sham Rebellion open it up.
Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings @ Elbo Room $10
A true old-school funk and soul revue, these cats are 100% bona fide authentic. Sharon is a phenomenal soul singer and the ‘Kings drop the funk like it’s hot out da oven. Word.

|||||| TUESDAY 5/17 ||||||
Crossfire Crew @ Bruno’s $6
It’s the newest band in the Jazz Mafia crime family, and word is they’re pretty hot. It’s sort of a world percussion meets live breakbeat kinda thing. With these guys, you can bet it’ll rock. Stella Artois is only two bucks for your cheap dating pleasure.
the Ritual & Garrin Benfield @ 12 Galaxies $5
Led by funky organist Jordan Feinstein, the Ritual continues their Tuesday residency at 12 Galaxies. Expect some great jamming and guests from some of the best bands in town. One of these cats is solo guitarist Garrin Benfield, who does live looping to create complex arrangements live on the spot. It’s hot.
|||||| WEDNESDAY 5/18 ||||||
Russo/Benevento Duo @ the Independent $12
I think I’ll probably have to check this one out. These two guys have been getting more and more amazing every single time they come around. It’s an organist and a drummer who happen to be telepathic and play with the intensity of a 20 piece band. You’ll hear anything from heavy acid jazz to Led Zeppelin covers, and they’ll floor you with both.
