Look out, now.
Once again for your reading pleasure, another Quickie McShow. Zoom zoom:
Achtung! San Francisco is about to be attacked by some of the funkiest
touring bands on Earth, and even though I should be eating lunch right
now I just need to get the word out. This is some seriously hot shit,
break out them oven mitts and hang on bitches!
Unfortunately I won't be able to make Greyboys this weekend (in
Boston, d'oh), but PLEASE do join me next week for Antibalas or for
Soulive. Really all three of these are can't-effing-miss shows, but
Antibalas is particularly rare and I know many of you haven't seen 'em
before. And they're playing in probably the best venue in the entire
city. Attendance is MANDATORY!

Greyboy Allstars @ the Fillmore $28.50
The West Coast boogaloo funky jazz band that defines the genre, this
might be my favorite group of musicians on the planet. The
incomparable lineup includes two personal heroes in Karl Denson and
Robert Walter on sax and organ. If you've been listening at all these
past few years, you've heard me say plenty about this band. A la
Colbert, movin' on...

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra @ Great American Music Hall $21
COME SEE THIS BAND. Inspired by Fela and Femi Kuti in the true
afrobeat style, this band puts out a wall of sound that is absolutely
in-funky-fectious and will have you groovin' your ass off from note
one. Afrobeat music is as Showy as it gets: combine deep African
percussive rhythms with a huge horn section blasting you with the very
nastiest in old school funk. It's just absurdly delicious, and I will
offer you a 100% money-back guarantee! You'll take a check, right..?

Soulive @ the Independent $25
Luckily this trio is doing a Thursday night show too. Antibalas &
Soulive back-to-back, goddamn life is GOOD. Soulive hits it harder
than any trio I've ever seen, they're like heavy metal groove jazz.
Just take anything that's ever bored you about jazz and throw it right
out the window. The intensity, the musicianship, it's just phenomenal
every time. And with SO MUCH SOUL... ridiculous.

HECK YES.

Couple more quickie notes. Funky geetarist Will Bernard is having a CD
release at 12 Galaxies on Friday the 23rd that should be pretty damn
hot: http://www.willbernard.com/
MUST go and see any Jazz Mafia band whenever possible. They appear in
one badass incarnation or another just about every night. Dig it here:

As always, keep it real. Real funky that is.
