Just in time to get funky for the weekend, happy
Friday ya'll!
There is plenty happening for your musical weekend and
especially beyond into next week's funky hump day.
The venerable Black Crowes start a five-night run at
the Fillmore tonight. Sure it's expensive, but
whaddaya expect?
The wall of sound that is the Realistic Orchestra will
be blasting at Jazz at Pearl's both nights this
weekend.
Daytime festivals in Potrero and McLaren Park go down
Saturday and Sunday.
Carlos Washington brings his funky trumpet to the Boom
Boom for cheap on Wednesday night.
Tea Leaf Green is playing a FREE happy hour show on
the Embarcadero on Thursday.
AND the mother gigs: Garage a Trois hits the
Independent for two nights of sonic ridiculousness on
Wednesday and Thursday. Don't even think about missing
those. Don't even.
Here's the lowdown for your getdown:
|||||| FRIDAY 8/5 ||||||
the Black Crowes @ the Fillmore $40
A five night Fillmore stand! For straight-up rock n’
roll it’s hard to beat the Black Crowes. You know you
love them and you know they still rock. Sunday,
Tuesday, and Wednesday Big Sam’s Funky Nation opens
up.

Realistic Orchestra @ Jazz at Pearl’s $10
Friday & Saturday shows! The big bad Jazz Mafia
all-star 18-piece breakbeat orchestra will rock the
hell out of Jazz at Pearl’s this weekend with two hot
sets each night. If you still haven’t seen these guys
just go! It’s unlike anything else, period.

|||||| SATURDAY 8/6 ||||||
Magic City Festival @ Potrero del Sol Park $FREE
Another free festival hits us with some tunes, this
time at 25th and Potrero from noon to 6pm. The band
lineup is: Papercuts, Hard Place, the Society of
Rockets, Mushroom, Pillows, and Jai Young Kim. Check
out the website for descriptions, the genres are all
over the map. Mushroom is rumored to be a great
psychadelic jam rock band. Thanks to Bernadette for
cluing me in to this.

Beatropolis @ Amnesia $5
These cats are described as a mix of future-jazz, live
drum n’ bass, soul, and downtempo. Saturday will be a
Portishead tribute with covers and originals inspired
by the band. Should be pretty cool, especially for
five bucks.

|||||| SUNDAY 8/7 ||||||
Jerry Day Festival @ McLaren Park $FREE
Get your hippie on for free at the annual celebration
of Jerry’s birthday in McLaren Park. The jammy lineup

and Seth Augustus. The grooves will flow from noon to

|||||| WEDNESDAY 8/10 ||||||
Garage a Trois @ Independent $23
Wednesday & Thursday shows! These guys kick so much
ass, I might have to go to BOTH shows! It’s a
powerhouse band of sonic geniuses featuring Charlie
Hunter playing guitar and bass on one instrument,
deep-groovin’ Stanton Moore of Galactic on drums,
madman Skerik on saxamaphone and somehow-equally-mad
man Mike Dillon on vibraphone and percussion. You’ve
seen some of these nutty cats in Frequinox, Critters
Buggin’, Hairy Apes BMX, Dead Kenny Gs, Les Claypool’s
Frog Brigade, and a slew of other ridiculous bands. As
Kid Beyond once said, miss these shows at your unfunky
peril!

Carlos Washington @ Boom Boom Room $5
This bad bad trumpet man cut his teeth matching Karl
Denson note for note. This gig will surely have nasty
soulful grooves as the central theme with a supporting
cast of funky jazz kings (notably percussionist Chuck
McPherson) backing Carlos up. And it’s cheap too!

|||||| THURSDAY 8/11 ||||||
Tea Leaf Green @ Justin Herman Plaza $FREE
A free after-work gig on the Embarcadero! Catch SF’s
hottest jam band outdoors making happy hour happy.
Music starts at 6pm with Rich Price opening.

Garage a Trois @ Independent $23
Wednesday & Thursday shows! DO NOT MISS, see above.

the New Up @ 12 Galaxies $8
All around good guy Mark Shoe plays bass in this
woman-fronted funky psychedelic rock band. With an
eclectic sound made from searing guitar, a powerful
rhythm section, and female vocals and flute, this
should be a tasty show. Two other bands fronted by
chicks open up: Zonk! and Artemis.
