Lordy lordy lordy, the Boom Boom Room is making me get
pushy again.
THIS time the huge name in the little room is none
other than Karl Denson, and he's playing tomorrow
(Friday) night! They just finished repairing the
blown-off roof from Soulive and now they're trying to
contain one of the funkiest sax players in the (tiny)
universe? I mean what the hell is going on here?
Regardless, I implore you to once again click the link
and buy a ticket RIGHT NOW before they're gone:

A Friday night Karl D show is a hell of a way to kick
off your funky weekend, but there is no slackin' off
after that. You dig? Friday and Saturday nights roots
jammer Ben Harper plays the Greek in Berkeley while
the big bad Dirty Dozen Brass Band plays the
Independent. During the daytime the Festival of the
Golden Gate (Sat & Sun at lovely Fort Mason) is
serving up a whole slew of talent including rockabilly
from Brian Setzer, mind-blowing drum antics from Kevin
Sawka, and (GOOD LAWD!) James Brown and Dr. John too!
But you may just have to skip the Godfather because
there will be one hell of a party at Stern Grove on
Sunday... Ozomatli will bring the funk with Crown City
Rockers opening up. EARLY is the word of the day for
that gig.
Jaysus! That's just THIS weekend. Up next week you can
find tons of fantastic shows from Wednesday to Sunday
for the Berkeley Jazz Fest. Check the schedule to see
what I'm spoutin' about. Our pal Bernadette is putting
on a great party at 12 Galaxies next Thursday
benefitting Power to the Peaceful with a bunch of
killer music including Radio Active and JP Cutler. The
following Friday sax man Topaz is pulling together a
badass who's-who of SF funk musicians once again at
the Boom Boom Room. The following Monday Phish cover
band (say what?) Phix plays 12 Galaxies before two
nights of Blue Turtle Seduction at the Ct. Yankee on
Tues. and Wed. And FINALLY on Wednesday the 30th the
incomparable Skerik leads his mind-blowing horn-laden
septet for a stellar night, also at 12 Galaxies.
This Showy is so damn long it's going to keep me up at
night wondering what I missed. At least there will be
some killer music to carry my worries away...
|||||| THURSDAY 8/17 ||||||
the RituaL & Friends @ Connecticut Yankee $5
Local keyboard whiz Jordan Feinstein will rock the
Yankee with his funky band as their
every-other-Thursday residency continues. This guy
knows some of the best musicians in the city, so you
never know who will pop up on stage.

|||||| FRIDAY 8/18 ||||||
Karl Denson & Benny D Band @ Boom Boom Room $15
Heck YES! What the hell is going on with the Boom Boom
dragging in huge names lately? Karl Denson, the
powerhouse sax man that gives Maceo Parker a run for
the title of Funkiest Sax Player Alive, is a stellar
performer by any standard. You've seen him with his
own Tiny Universe, or perhaps as one of the founding
funksters in the Greyboy Allstars. For this gig he's
teaming up with New Orleans funk guitarist Benny D and
his band to blow the damn doors off a tiny room. In
the words of Kid Beyond: MISS THIS AT YOUR UNFUNKY
PERIL!
Ben Harper | Damian Marley @ Greek Theater (Berkeley)
$40
Friday & Saturday shows. After all these years, I
still have yet to see this legendary roots-funk soul
man. These Greek shows should be an absolute blast. It
certainly doesn't hurt that Damian Marley will jah up
the place beforehand too.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band @ Independent $17
Friday & Saturday shows. Big, bad, brassy, and one of
'Nawlins' best! For straight up tuba-bumpin',
horn-blastin' FUNk it's hard to do better than the
Dirty Doz. They're an absolute wall of sound, and with
the system at the Independent your ears will be
ringing for weeks. Etienne de Rocher opens up.

Festival of the Golden Gate (FOGGfest) @ Fort Mason
$35
Saturday & Sunday 11am–6pm. There are some serious and

gorgeous Fort Mason. On Saturday the lineup is Brian
Setzer & the Nashvillains, Los Amigos Invisibles, the
Donnas, Lyrics Born, Sean Hayes, KJ Sawka (fastest
drummer EVER), Shantytown, and Vau de Vire Society
(acrobat troupe). Each one a quality act, making the
tickets a bargain. The only reason I'm missing this is
because I'll be in Monterey. But check out the
headliners Sunday...

Ozomatli | Crown City Rockers @ Stern Grove $FREE
Get there EARLY and get ready to bring the party to
the Grove! Celebrating the birth of the incomparable
Dancin' Nancy, we'll have a nice crew of inebriated
people down front to welcome the big bad
Afro-Cubo-HipHop funk band that is Ozomatli. This one
should be packed so seriously, don't sleep in on
Sunday. East Bay roots hip-hop band Crown City Rockers
open tha shizzle up. Bring it.

Festival of the Golden Gate (FOGGfest) @ Fort Mason
$50
Saturday & Sunday 11am–6pm. There are some serious and

one and only James Brown, Dr. John, Leela James, Blind
Boys of Alabama, Salvador Santana Band, Matty Nash &
Friends, Nino Moschella, Jeff Jolly Band, and Vau de
Vire Society (acrobat troupe). These days $50 is a
steal to see just James Brown, why oh why does
Ozomatli have to be opposite this?!?

|||||| WEDNESDAY 8/23 ||||||
Brass Mafia @ Boom Boom Room $6
It's a rockin' night of New Orleans brass funk served
up by the Bay Area's very best jazz musicians. Who
else but the Jazz Mafia can bring this much funk on a
Wednesday night? Get it all over ya.

Click the link below for a full schedule, this is a
heck of an event. Some of the best names in both the
Bay Area and the national jazz scene will be rocking
Berkeley all week long. Some of my personal faves from
the list include Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Mingus

Power to the Peaceful Fundraiser @ 12 Galaxies $12
Headlining this progressive benefit night is Radio
Active (beatbox/live-loop madman with Spearhead)
playing with some of the roots jazz cats from Free
Peoples. And to sweeten the deal we have local
fingerpickin' hero JP Cutler, our bestest buddy
Bernadette & Friends with good time rock n'roll, and
kicking off the night (in case you're hungry) it's
Making Dinner. This'll be a rad party, see ya there.

Red Hot Chili Peppers | Mars Volta @ Oakland Arena $51
Thursday & Friday shows. I don't have to tell you
about the Chilis, who of course have combined punk and
funk in a way that no other rock band really has. But
what I might have to tell you is that I don't know
anyone who has been disappointed by their live show.
And opening up are crazy prog-trip-rockers the Mars
Volta who are also pretty damn ridiculous in their own
right.

Walter, Fully Loaded), Ron Johnson (bass, Karl
Denson's Tiny U.), Brian Jordan (guitar, Karl Denson's
Tiny U.), Will Bernard (guitar, Motherbug, Fully

Stymie & the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra @ Elbo Room $10
Get down with the longest name in San Francisco funky
soul music. Stymie takes cues from the original old
school party funk bands (think Sly Stone and you're
right on target). They're just a hell of a lot of fun.

Phix @ 12 Galaxies $12
Of course cover bands are cheesy. I know. But dammit,
I'm such a sucker for Phish that if these guys do any
sort of reasonable facsimile thereof, I'm down to
catch 'em. I've actually heard that yes indeed, they
are pretty good. And if there's one thing you can say
about Phish, it's that their music is damn hard to
play...

|||||| TUESDAY 8/29 ||||||
Blue Turtle Seduction @ Connecticut Yankee $8?
Tuesday & Wednesday shows. Rock the hell out of your
week with this up-and-coming high-energy Tahoe
jamgrass band. Blue Turtle has gotten consistently
better every time I've seen 'em over the last couple
years, and everyone was raving about their last High
Sierra set. It's just fast-pickin' fun.

Tribute to Syd Barrett @ Cafe du Nord $FREE
As I'm sure you all knew, Syd Barrett, founding member
of Pink Floyd and the original Crazy Diamond, passed
from this world recently. The lineup of talent for
this FREE tribute show is quite diverse and probably
can all be described as "eclectic". Just what Syd
would've wanted. Dig the link for a huge list of
performers including the Moore Brothers, Jean Marie,
the Dilettantes, Etienne de Rocher, and more.

Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet @ 12 Galaxies $12
Just try to tear me away from this one! Go ahead and
try! Some musicians don't seem to play music as much
as CHANNEL the stuff. Skerik (of Garage A Trois, Les
Claypool, Critters Buggin', Tuatara, and lots of other
sick bands) is just such a sax player. His big ol'
7-piece is loaded some of the most smokin' horns and
mind-blowing orchestration you'll hear anywhere. Just
go.

Blue Turtle Seduction @ Connecticut Yankee $8?
Tuesday & Wednesday shows, see above.

|||||| THURSDAY 8/31 ||||||
Jesus Diaz y su QBA @ Union Square $FREE
6pm–7:30pm. SF Jazz is putting on this sweet free gig
right in the center of commerce-land. I've been
hearing about Jesus Diaz for a while but have yet to
see him. He's a percussionist from Cuba and leads a
big ensemble of Afro-Cuban jazz funk with a bit of
rumba for good foot stompin' measure. All free!
http://www.bombomusic.com/html/artists.html
Beatbox vs. Brass Mafia @ Amnesia $FREE
This sounds pretty whacky. Badass local beatboxers
will duke it out with our own Brass Mafia in a rumble
that's sure to shake the Mission to its core. Nasty.
