8/11/2005: Tea Leaf Green downtown for FREE after work tonight!

Howdy folks-

Welcome to Thursday afternoon in musicland.

If ya'll know what's good for you you'll boogie on
down to Justin Herman Plaza on the Embarcadero and
join me after work for a free outdoor happy hour
performance by Tea Leaf Green. It's going down at 6
with opener Rich Price, and it's all free dammit.

AND if you really know what's good for you you'll head
out to see Garage a Trois for their last night in town
this evening. Last night they tore the roof completely
off the joint. They probably won't suck tonight
either.

Of course there are some other great shows tonight and
throughout the entire weekend. Russell Batiste at the
Boom Boom will be real funky, Stern Grove on Sunday is
getting invaded by New Orleans, String Cheese
Incident
's Bill Nershi is playing a rare intimate gig
at the CT Yankee on Sunday night, and the list goes
on...

Garage a Trois @ Independent $23 (limited tickets
available)
They destroyed the place last night, this is one hell
of an ass kickin’ band. It’s a powerhouse foursome of
sonic geniuses featuring Charlie Hunter playing guitar
and bass on one instrument, deep-groovin’ Stanton
Moore of Galactic on drums, madman Skerik on
saxamaphone and somehow-equally-mad man Mike Dillon on
vibraphone and percussion. You’ve seen some of these
nutty cats in Frequinox, Critters Buggin’, Hairy Apes
BMX
, Dead Kenny Gs, Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade, and a
slew of other ridiculous bands. As Kid Beyond once
said, miss these shows at your unfunky peril!

the New Up @ 12 Galaxies $8
All around good guy Mark Schuh plays bass in this
woman-fronted funky psychedelic rock band. With an
eclectic sound made from searing guitar, a powerful
rhythm section, and female vocals and flute, this
should be a tasty show. Two other bands fronted by
chicks open up: Zonk! and Artemis.

Plum Crazy @ Last Day Saloon $5
A Nor-Cal 5-piece, this jam band has been getting some
great press lately. You may have seen their excellent
bass player Greg Garvey playing with longtime buddy
Adam Willis.

grooves.

Russell Batiste & Da Orchestra @ Boom Boom Room $15
Saturday & Sunday shows! The funky drummer of Funky
Meters fame is going to rock the Boom Boom Room with
his own band this weekend. It’s mostly about funk with
a little jazz, reggae, rock, and Cajun added to the
mix. And the band is featuring Karl Denson’s stellar
former trumpet player Carlos Washington. Hot stuff
kids.
