Howdy howdy howdy!
Gat damn, ah say Gat damn there is a lot of great
music to tell ya'll about. I'm just gonna get right
the hell into it because there is so freakin' much.
First and foremost the GREYBOY ALLSTARS are playing
Wednesday through Friday next week (1/1–1/3). I'll be
there Wednesday night (the only night that isn't sold
out yet) and maybe Thursday too. These guys are the
best funky soul-jazz boogaloo players working today,
period. I'll stake my reputation (good or bad) on it.
They are all so successful in their own projects that
they rarely play together anymore. Miss this at your
unfunky peril!
In other news, I'm hitting a great gig tonight on the
cheap at the Connecticut Yankee. The Shim Sham
Rebellion (rock/jazz fusion) has a new and nasty
rhythm section and a guest female jazz vocalist.
Should be really cool and it's just five bucks, c'mon
out!
Then the weekend just goes all to hell: The Boom Boom
Room is hosting two nights with Motherlode, an allstar
funky jazz collective that will be a sweet warm up for
the Greyboys (might go Friday I think). Rebirth Brass
Band is doing a two night run with kick-ass openers
for both shows. G. Love is in town for a rare gig
Saturday night.
Oh, and this should be great: I'm catching a crazy
Aphrodesia party in a cool Potrero space on
Saturdaywith tons of Afrobeat musicians and
performance artists on the bill. Come along!
And wait, there's more...
Finally I want to let you all know that the next
McShow will be chock-full of down home bluegrass
music. Next Thursday is the start of the SF Bluegrass
& Old Time Festival with 10 nights of stellar music
from the best and brightest string players out there.
The lineup is unreal, check out the calendar here:

Righty-oh! If you're goin' to a show, let me know!
|||||| THURSDAY 1/26 ||||||
Shim Sham Rebellion @ Connecticut Yankee $5
I'm there like Fred Astair! Blurring the boundaries
between rock and jazz in all ways groovin' are the
Shim Sham. They've got a new rhythm section from the
likes of Albino, Zigaboo, and Motherbug and word is
we'll even hear a female jazz vocalist doing some
Zeppelin. Sweet.

|||||| FRIDAY 1/27 ||||||
Motherlode @ Boom Boom Room $15
Friday & Saturday shows! Heck YES! This is one band
that backs up their name. Think of it as a little
slice of the Greyboy Allstars pie. The players serving
up this funky-soul-jazz-boogaloo nastiness are John
Staten (drums, Karl Denson), Chris Stillwell (bass,
Greyboy Allstars), Brian Jordan (guitar, Karl Denson),
Chuck Prada (percussion, Robert Walter & Black Eyed
Peas), Cochemea Gastalum (sax, Robert Walter), and
Anthony Farrell (keys, Greyhounds). This will be
completely sick.

Aphrodesia and more @ Xenodrome (WH space @ 1320

Help Aphrodesia fund their upcoming tour of West
Africa by going out and gettin' down. This will be one
big crazy funky Afrobeat party with special guests
Eric McFadden, Sila, some cats from Johnny Sketch,
Soulsalaam, Ghanaian drummers, African dancers, and
lots more insanity. Sounds like a freakin' blast, I'm
totally there. Goes 'til 4am by the way...

THE GREYBOY ALLSTARS @ Independent $25 (Thurs & Fri
advance tix sold out)
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday shows thank God! I'll
be there Wednesday and maybe Thursday hoppin' up and
down, and all around too really. These sumbitches are
easily in my top five. They are some of the best of
the best players in funky jazz today. To a man: Karl
Denson, Robert Walter, Chris Stillwell, Elgin Park,
Zak Najor). If you have ever thought about thinking
that you might think you want to hear the funkiest
soul acid jazz you ever did here, GO. And if not, go
anyway.
