This is not one of those messages.
It really couldn't be more simple. There is a monstrous musician tonight, and four monstrous musicians (luckily playing together) on Sunday night that you need to see. That's it, that's all, Showy, out:

Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band @ Yoshi's Oakland - $12–18
8pm & 10pm shows (join me at 10!) I was lucky enough to witness drummer Brian Blade supporting legendary sax player Wayne Shorter last year and, much to the surprise of our group, Brian blew him almost completely off the stage. Blade absolutely embodies the term monstrous in the power of his playing and the absoluteness with which he commands beats and rhythms. He is really an incredible sight to be seen and is certainly one of the best, if not the best, jazz drummers I have ever seen. Go tonight and see something amazing you've never seen...

Skerik, Scott Amendola, Will Bernard, Will Blades @ Cafe du Nord - $12
These four guys, playing two sets, in one tiny venue, for one extremely tiny cover charge... basically constitutes Uncle Showy's idea of the perfect storm. You've all heard me babble about the evil saxophone maelstrom that is Skerik many times, but if you haven't seen him with any of his musical cohorts (Les Claypool, Garage a Trois, Critters Buggin', Dead Kenny Gs, etc), then THIS is the night you've been waiting for. Joining Skerik are three men of equally monstrous musicality: Long-time Charlie Hunter drummer Scott Amendola, who is a true and absolute master on the jazz drum kit; Hollow body funky rhythm guitar institution Will Bernard; and Wil Blades, probably the Bay Area's best Hammond organ player, and a man with chops for both nasty bass lines and funky organ solos. It's Sunday, you're not doing anything, and the Simpsons will be on Hulu. Just go!
