Hi kiddies-
Man another great run of music has come and gone
breezing through town. I hope you all had a great
North Beach Jazz/Tour de Fat/Stern Grove time! I know
I did. Well, this rarely happens around here but one
band has really stolen the show for this upcoming
weekend. I don't know when these guys will come around
again on the same stage so it's probably a real good
idea to catch one of their shows coming up in the next
few days. Without further ado...
FRIDAY 8|6
~the Frequinox @ the Boom Boom Room: $25~
HOLY CRAP! Dig this ridiculous band: Robert Walter
(keys & organ Greyboy Allstars & 20th Congress),
Stanton Moore (drums Galactic), Robert Mercurio (bass
Galactic), Will Bernard (guitar Motherbug), and Donald
Harrison (sax Headhunters). There's a damn good reason
this is the most expensive Boom Boom show that's come
around in awhile. The idea was to put together an
east-meets-west funk/soul-jazz powerhouse specifically
bent on blowing your mind. My guess is they're going
to achieve that goal. It won't be a surprise if
tickets sell out, which brings me to...
Reason #1372 why I love this city: Word on the street
is that these guys are all going to play FOR FREE in
the little square at Fillmore and O'Farrel from
5:00pm-8:00pm before the show! You'd better believe
I'll be there... let me know if you want to go check
it out.
~the Vowel Movement @ Ashkenaz in Berkeley: $12~
I'm still dying to catch this. It's basically a
beatbox showcase with the best mouth-players in the
Bay Area. The incredible Kid Beyond is one of the guys
putting it together and if the other 10 or so
beatboxers are even half as good as him, this is sure
to be a great time. The two breakdancing troupes on
the bill don't hurt, and I've heard great things about
this venue lately too.

excellent Alex Budman on sax. Tickets may sell out.

~the Frequinox @ 19 Broadway in Fairfax: $18~

~Aphrodesia @ Mighty: $cheapish~
Mighty? A new venue? It's at Utah & 15th apparently.
Their lineup sure looks cool and this particular party
features the body-shakin' afrobeat sounds of
Aphrodesia. It's a benefit for the Just Vote Tour.

~Shotgun Wedding Quintet @ Bruno's: $7~
Jazz Mafia Tuesday brings the funky hip-hop of Shotgun
Wedding. Adam, Aspect, Dublin, and Joe will all be in
effect. With $2 Stella flowing, how can you lose?
AND that's all for now. Wow, I finally did a short
one. It's timely because I'm probably over-extended
time-wise these days. If I've been a communication
slacker, sorry 'bout that. Gotta check out new venues-
this 'Mighty' place sounds cool and the Hotel Utah
just re-opened. More on that soon enough... Cheers!
